Zelenci is a small, emerald green glacial lake, a kilometre away from the log cabin. There is one of the two springs of the longest Slovenian river the Sava Dolinka river. A series of footbridges and wooden bridges allow visitors to access the heart of the nature reserve, where you are taken by the feeling that time has stopped. No noise, just a splash of trout. That is right, even fish can be heard too.
The idyllic alpine village is famous for the World Cup skiing competition takes place on its slopes every year. The clustered settlement with a square and a linden tree was once a toll booth for carters and mail carriages and a link between the valley and Central Europe. Many older houses in the village centre have been restored though still radiating a rich architectural heritage. The village was the setting for a film about Kekec, a Slovenian fictional child character, a fearless shepherd from the highlands. Two village events should not be missed. The first one is meeting of the Krampuses of Slovenia, Italy and Austria: horned, anthropomorphic figures in Alpine folklore who scare naughty children during the Christmas season. The second event is the World Men's Ski Championships for the Vitranc Cup.
Planica is an important winter sports centre and a starting point for shorter and longer mountain tours. Visit the mecca of ski jumping in Slovenia, take a walk to the top of the valley, to Tamar, climb to Ciprnik and see the westernmost Slovenian valley from a bird's eye view. Unforgettable.
The Jasna lake consists of two artificial lakes that are connected to one another. The lake lies along the road that leads across the Vršič pass, at the confluence of two streams the Velika Pišnica and Mala Pišnica, less than a kilometre away from Kranjska Gora. Located outside the town, surrounded with the magical mountain scenery which makes it one of the most popular excursion points. Swimming in the lake is reserved for the brave even in the summer, and those even braver can combine swimming with jumping to the lake from the viewing platform. And you definitely have to take a photo next to the famous bronze ibex.
The Heathen Maiden (Slovene: Ajdovska deklica) is the image of a girl with a sad face, a rock formation that resembles a human face. It can be seen in the northern face in the northern wall of Prisojnik, today one of the most interesting sights on our highest pass, Vršič. Many tourists stop here to see the image and read the legend of the Heathen Maiden. It can be best seen from the viewpoint at ‘Poštarski dom’ mountain cabin at Vršič, but it is also visible from the Erjavec mountain cabin.
Ciprnik is a viewpoint between the valleys of Mala Pišnica and Planica and is an indispensable backdrop for the Planica ski-jumping arena. In the mountaineering books, the route to both peaks is described as a shorter full-day tour. You will overcome a good 800 metres of altitude difference, but in the end you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of Ponce, Jalovec, Tamar, Mojstrovka and Slemenova špica as well as the valley of Mala Pišnica, Martuljška gora, Karavanke, Dobrač and the three-thousand-metre high peaks to the north in Austria.
